Case: Engineered Home Wi-Fi & Structured Cabling

Engineered Home Network for Reliable Connectivity

Project Overview

This project involved upgrading a standard ISP-provided setup to a fully engineered home network. The goal was to eliminate dead zones and ensure consistent bandwidth for remote work and smart home automation across a large property. Previously, the homeowners were struggling with unreliable coverage, dropped video calls, and inconsistent device performance.

The Discovery
During an on-site visit for an EV charger installation, we identified critical flaws in the existing network topology. The ISP router was positioned solely for installer convenience, blocking signals to key living areas.

Diagnosis:
  • Poor Placement: Signal blocked by garage walls and structural elements.
  • Lack of Infrastructure: No wired backhaul between access points.
  • Cable Management: Unplanned and exposed wiring.
The system was installed, but never engineered. That difference explained the instability.
  • FACT CHECK
    Location: Central Pennsylvania
Home type: Single-family home, large footprint, garage + remote rooms
    Entry request: EV charger installation
Hidden issue: Wi-Fi Dead Zones & Signal Interference

Solution

Instead of adding cheap extenders, we treated the network as a utility. We redesigned the infrastructure with structured cabling and proper access point placement.
  • Whole-home mesh architecture for seamless roaming
  • Wired backhaul (Cat6) connecting all nodes
  • Clean integration with existing electrical infrastructure
The goal was not “stronger Wi-Fi” - but predictable, stable connectivity everywhere.
Implementation
The redesigned network was deployed across the entire home, including:
  • Garage
  • Remote rooms
  • Outdoor and transitional areas
No visible hardware clutter.
No app juggling.
No daily troubleshooting.

Outcome

The engineered network restored stable connectivity, removed friction, and prepared the home for future smart systems.

The homeowners received:

  • Stable internet in all areas of the home and backyard
  • Two people working full-time remotely without interruptions
  • No more router adjustments or device resets
  • A network ready for cameras, locks, and IoT automation
  • clean and accurate wiring without messy tech clutter
